Of What Use Are Outdoor Curtains

Lighting info brought to you by LightingShowroom.com

Not many people use curtains for the outside of their homes. To most people curtains are for the inside, and however innovatively they use curtains inside the homes, very rarely are they considered for the outside.Outdoor Curtains

Most of the time outdoor curtains are used only by hotels and other such places to give a totally different feel to a suite or cottage. Yet when they are used in our homes we can recreate the same feel there too.

For example take outdoor patio curtains. Patios are traditionally left open. Many times it will even have a roof, to keep the rain out, but no walls. There’s really no need for one, the understanding being that if they wanted anything more, they would build a room.

However have you ever considered how your patio will look with curtains on them. For example, you could install flimsy, white lace curtains and gather them near every pillar in your patio, and you’ve just brought some color into your plain patio. You don’t have to do anything more than just put up the curtains and tie them with a ribbon of the color of your choice to the pillar, and your home has just gotten a patio that will make it look like a Spanish hacienda.

You could even install full-fledged outdoor curtains for the patio if you live in a place where you get a lot of rain, or if the wind is very violent. However nice it is to have an outdoor patio, many a time you would appreciate a nook where you can sit out of the wind and a curtain is as good a way of providing this as any.

The kind of curtains you put up in your patio depends on you. For example, you could go with synthetic material if you feel that maintenance will be an issue although they really do not look or feel nice. You also need to get heavy material if you do not want the curtains flapping in the breeze. In the same way that curtains are used as space separators inside the home, they can also be used outside for the same reason. Having the curtains open will give a feeling of spaciousness, but drawing them will suddenly convert the same spacious patio, into a lovers nest that is warm and cozy.

Lighting info brought to you by LightingShowroom.com

What is commercial outdoor lighting?

When most of us think of lighting; we think of lighting our homes…inside and outside…with decorative, cost and energy efficient lighting. Although there is a world of lighting outside our homes, most of us fail to realize it. Take a step outside your home and you will find that your roads are flooded with light, parking lots are well lit and even your sidewalks are well lit. Without these lights our world will be filled with darkness, with no one feeling secure and crime rates will be on the rise, for that is how important commercial outdoor lighting is. Let’s understand what commercial lighting is and where you can get your lights for cheap.

What is commercial lighting?

Commercial lights are any lights that are used for purposes other than residential such as roads, highways, business establishments, hospitals, factories and parking lots. Commercial lighting is broadly classified into commercial outdoor lighting and indoor commercial lights.

Outdoor commercial lighting

These are lights that are used for illumination outside businesses, industries, hospitals and other non-residential areas. Commercial lighting fixtures that are used for outdoor lighting include those that are used on streets as street lights, as lighting for roads and highways, for billboards, parking lots, malls, outside school, college and business areas. These lights are extremely durable and capable of withstanding harsh environments including storms and heavy wind.

Indoor commercial lighting

Indoor commercial light fixtures are lights that are used inside non-residential buildings such as schools, hospitals, universities, businesses and malls.  They also include lighting for operating theaters and assembly lines. This is why this type of lighting needs to be extremely efficient as without it, production can come to a standstill.

Commercial lighting is especially available with those who specialize in manufacturing and selling lights for commercial purposes. These lights are usually extremely energy and cost efficient as they cater to industrial standards and most wholesalers offer discounts as the quantities purchased are often in bulk. Be sure to check your options online as a lot of online retailers do offer discounts that will guarantee you a good deal.

Outdoor Garden Lighting

Lighting info brought to you by LightingShowroom.com

The outsides of our homes are as important to us as the insides of our homes. Most of us want the outside of our homes to look good, that is why we go to great extents to rake up the yard, mow the lawn, trim the hedges, clear our walkways and clean our driveways. Some of us go to greater extents to make the outsides of our homes look good, we add patio furniture, deck lights, tend to a lovely garden by adding furniture, decorative figurines and delicate lighting to enhance the beauty of our outdoors. Of all the things we do to our outdoors and outdoor gardens, adding lovely outdoor garden lighting is by far the most effective.

Nice looking gardens are gardens that are tended well. Lovely gardens are those with beautiful plants, flowers and shrubs that beautify its surroundings. The most extraordinary gardens are those gardens that have lights in them. Enhancing our gardens are important because gardens are an extension of our homes, and if our gardens looks good, our homes also appear to look elegant. Most of us tend to comment on what a lovely garden a home has as we tend to associate beauty to the home because of its garden. Light up your garden, for it will go a long way in making your home look stunning.

There are many different garden lights that you can choose from. You could use string lights that look like stars over your garden, or lit up fruits of a tree or even sparkling fireflies on your hedges at night. There are several lighting options for your garden walkway such as recessed lights, bollard lights, lanterns and spot lights. You can even get lighting that adorns your garden like lit up robins and birds drinking out of a bird bath to frogs that seem to grace your outdoor gardens. Outdoor fountains with lights are another interesting garden accessory that you can consider to light up your garden. The important thing to remember is although there are many different ways to make your garden look extraordinary, the best way to do it is by using lights and ornaments that you love. This will ensure that you have a garden that is well lit, beautiful and one of a kind.

Lighting up your outdoor gardens can be quite expensive if you are not using the right type of lighting. There are two ways to light up your garden with the least expense and that is by using LEDs and solar powered garden lights. Solar powered lights are terrific options to use in areas where there is an abundance of sunlight. The advantage of these lights are that they are convenient to use, they can be used anywhere around your garden as they don’t need to be plugged. These also don’t cost you anything on your utility bills and last a very long time. LEDs on the other hand offer more color and design options when compared to solar powered outdoor lights. LEDs also last for an average of 50,000 hours and are 80% more energy efficient than regular incandescent lamps. They are very low costing on your utility bills and are the better option to use in areas where there is a lot of rain and overcast weather.

Outdoor solar string lights are available at prices as low as $15. LED string lights are available at prices as low as $25. Many garden statues and fountains with light are available at prices between $30 and $ 1000. With so many lighting options available you can definitely get ones within your budget that you will love.

Checklist when buying outdoor lighting

Lighting info brought to you by LightingShowroom.com

Picking good outdoor lighting can be a real challenge. It's hard to know exactly what to look for. I recently walked several neighborhoods in Nashville with an expert outdoor lighting designer discussing lighting design for that home. Outdoor lighting design is an art but here are a couple key objectives to consider when selecting outdoor lighting for your home:

WidthHeightDepthTextureOutdoor Architectural Lighting

Width -

One of the first things to consider in your outdoor lighting design is how to elongate the width of your home. This has two key benefits. From an aesthetic perspective, outdoor lighting makes your home sing at night. So you want to show it off from end to end. But, even more importantly,  you want to make sure to have light at the far ends of your home's facade on both sides. Intruders are much less likely to hide or move in illuminated areas than in darkened areas.

Height -

The next thing to consider is showing the full height of your home. Good outdoor lighting reaches the peaks of your roof line to really show off your home at night. After all, outdoor lighting is an investment in aesthetics as well as in safety and security. Your home's facade may have multiple peaks in the form of dormers, or a multi-tiered facade. Make sure your lighting illuminates each of those peaks. Sometimes this can be done with one light or sometimes you may need an extra light or a light elevated off the ground to accomplish this lighting objective. Take a look at how each of the 3 peaks of this home are illuminated giving height to this home.

Depth -

Porches and balconies serve a functional purpose but they also add dramatically to the facade of your home by giving it depth. Dormers and other architectural features do the same. Your outdoor lighting design should cast light from different areas so as to allow these features to be pronounced and therefore to make your home look even better at night. See how the unique architectural features of this home, illuminated, give great depth and warmth to this evening illumination.

Texture -

Textured walls are all the rage now. On the outside of your home, the subtle textures of the brick on your chimney or small architectural details of your home's facades, when illuminated, really make your home pop at night. Illuminating these details gives warmth to your outdoor illumination and invites guests to feel at home. See how this home's columns pop when illuminated with their outdoor lighting.

Extend your architectural lighting to include your landscape lighting

Take a look at how the landscape lighting and architectural lighting on this home come together.  The landscaping extends forward from the home giving the perfect opportunity to show it off at night while adding to the lighting depth.

Take a test drive

Ask for a night-time demo. This way you can see what you'll be getting, why it's designed that way, and even work with the lighting designer to fine tune and tweak your lighting design for the best overall presentation. When they come out, tell them about your safety concerns, how you use your yard at night and what you would like better illuminated for your outdoor living and outdoor needs at night. Reputable companies will look forward to this, welcome it, and be willing to invest their time before you make your investment.
