Reception Desks

A reception desk is obviously not meant for homes but for offices and such places. Although the new age design theme tends to deviate a lot from convention, a reception area is still an essential and having a desk is imperative. This is because the reception area is the first place anyone will see and this is what makes the first impression.

Companies go to a lot of effort to find a receptionist who will make a good impression and the reception desk also has to be as good if you want to make a hit right from the beginning. The desk has to be impressive looking because that is what it is meant to do; impress others, but it also has to be functional because the receptionist is also invariably also a customer service person and needs a lot of information at his or her fingertips to be able to help customers. This necessitates a work desk which is often, but not always, very clean and tidy.

Designers have solved this by having two tops for the same desk. Most reception desks will have a table top at a comfortable height for the person sitting behind the desk, while there will be a higher counter at elbow height where customers can lean on their elbows. This also forms an effective screen so that people on the other side of the desk will not be able to view what is going on behind the desk.

This is very useful when you are dealing with irate customers who will claim a lot that you don’t want to give them. In hotels there are people who will create a scene simply because they feel that doing so will get them an upgrade. The desk also has to be very imposing although the size of the desk depends more on the size of the room and the décor. For example there are some places that will go for the “large is better” theme and get a really imposing piece of furniture. Others will go with a simplistic theme and get a simple, yet elegant and good quality desk.

The shape of the reception desk is also up to you. There are simple single desks or the usual L shaped ones. These desks are probably the most common because they can be shoved up against the corner effectively making it into a small alcove and giving space for a minimum of two receptionists there. There are also larger U shaped ones for those who want to keep the reception desk in the middle of the room as well as a hemispherical shaped desk. What kind of desk you choose depends more on the rest of the room and however simple or imposing the desk is it should complement the décor not create a jarring effect.

You would be surprised at the prices at which these desks come in. most reception desks are made of plywood, or some similar material, and are therefore not too expensive. The wooden ones are very expensive, but you also have a number of limitations on the size as well as the designs that you get them in. There are really large U shaped desks that you can get for between $700 and $900 while you can get simpler ones for less than $400. In fact if you are open to getting it assembled at your place of work, you can even purchase it online and avail yourself of a number of discounts that you get for purchasing on the Internet. Even if you don’t want to buy it online it is a good place to do your window shopping.
