How Do Touch Lamps Work

Lighting info brought to you by LightingShowroom.com

Touch lamps are lamps that come on when you touch them. Although they are no different from other lamps except for their touch properties, most of us prefer them to normal lamps. There’s something about touching a lamp and turning it on that seems to appeal to most of us. Children especially love these lamps and will spend endless hours turning them on and off.  So let’s read on and see how these amazing lamps actually work.

How do touch lamps work?

Touch lamps have no visible switches. Touching any part of the lamp will turn it on. How this works is, these lamps have a circuit wired under the external layer of the lamp and when one touches the external circuit, a switch is triggered on internally to turn on the lamp.

What is capacitance?

Capacitance is the ability of any substance to hold an electrical charge. Almost all objects have a certain amount of capacitance including the human body. Although in varying degrees, the capacitance of the lamp in combination with the capacitance of the human body are enough to light up the lamp simply by touching it. Touch lamps have special circuits which detect the change in capacitance needed to trigger the lights coming on. So, all you need to do is touch any part of the lamp and you can turn the lights on or off without an external switch.

Dimming and brightness options

Most touch lamps come with three levels of brightness, which can be changed by rapidly touching the lamps on and off. With each rapid touching on and off, the circuit uses different 4 different duty cycles such as 0, 33, 66 and 100 percent to alter the brightness of the lamp.

The biggest advantage of touch lamps over regular lamps is that you don’t need to bother with switches. All you need to do is to touch it to turn it on. In addition to that, these lamps can be a lot of fun and can be an interesting gadget to play with. So if you would like a fun lamp that comes on with the touch of your hand, then these lovely touch lamps are the ones for you.
