How to Make a Bean Bag Chair

Lighting info brought to you by LightingShowroom.com

Making bean bags can be easy if you know how. So let’s take a look at the parts of a bean bag, things you need and steps involved in making your own bean bag chairs.

Parts of a bean bag

• An outer cover with a zip
• an inner cover with a zip that contains the pellets

The zips are mainly for convenience to slip the outer cover on and off when washing and replacing it. The inner cover comes with a zip which helps you to replace the pellets whenever necessary. The best material to use for the inner lining is muslin cloth, while the outer cover can be made out of any material that is easy to stitch with such as denim, velvet, corduroy, cotton and suede. Although you could use vinyl, they are much more difficult to stitch with and unless you are a very good seamstress, they may not be the best fabric to choose.

Things you will need for making bean bags

1. Fabric for the outer cover – 5 yards or 4.6 meters
2. Fabric for the inner cover – 5 yards or 4.6 meters
3. zipper – 56 cm
4. Polystyrene pellets / water insoluble packing peanuts– 6 cu. Ft.
5. 1 inch grid such as cutting mat or graph paper

Equipment you will need

1. A pair of scissors
2. A ruler or straightedge
3. A pencil
4. A piece of tracing or pattern paper
5. Pins to hold fabric together
6. Sewing thread
7. Sewing machine

How to make a bean bag chair

• You will in total need to make 6 side pieces each for the cover as well as the inner lining. 2 pieces each for the bottom cover as well as the bottom lining. And 1 piece each for the top cover and lining.
• For the top pieces, fold a piece of paper and make a mark halfway. Then take a pencil and a straightedge and draw an arc that measures 5.5m from the point marked. Now unfold the paper and cut out the arc to form a circle. This will be the pattern for your top pieces. Now cut out a piece each from the muslin and outer cover to create fabric for the top of your bean bag chair.
• For the bottom pieces, fold a piece of paper and make a mark halfway. Then take a pencil and a straightedge, draw an arc that measures 12 inches from the point marked. Now unfold the paper and cut out the arc to form a circle. Cut out a 1.3 cm line on the fold and cut along that line, discarding the smaller semi circle. This will form the base of your bean bag chair. You will need two pieces cut out of the fabric for both the outer as well as the inner bag to make the bottom of the bean bag chair.
• For the side pieces, follow the same procedure as the top piece but draw an arc measuring 2.5 cm. You will need to cut out 6 pieces each for the outer and inner cover to make the sides for the bean bag.
• Now pinning the bottom pieces together, stitch them together using ½ inch seam at regular length. At the part where the two bottom pieces join, place the zipper and stitch it on. So both the outer as well as the inner lining will have a zipper to help you refill pellets and replace covers.
• Repeat the process with the top and side pieces, finally stitching them together, forming a complete bean bag chair outer and inner cover.
• Turn them inside out and fill the inner lining with the pellets. A good alternative for pellets would be peanut casing which is not water soluble.

Making bean bags on your own can be very satisfying and something you can take pride in. With these easy steps you can make yourself a bean bag that will blend with your home as it is truly an original, one of a kind piece that you will not be able to purchase anywhere else.
